Aliza Schwartzman is Associate General Counsel for the Corporate and Patient Services area of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Her practice focuses on hospital and physician operational, regulatory and transactional matters, including contracting, navigating interactions with the device and pharmaceuticals industry, and fraud and abuse issues. She supports the Department of Marketing and Public Affairs in relationship to physician sponsorship and filming activities. She is also responsible for providing the health system and the University, including the IRB, with advice relating to health information exchange and HIPAA. Ms. Schwartzman served as the Interim Chief Privacy Officer for the health system from October of 2007 through December of 2008.

Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel in April 2000, Ms. Schwartzman was in private practice in the Washington, D.C. office of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., practicing regulatory and transactional health care. Prior to that, she worked as a staff attorney in the Office of General Counsel for the Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation and Johns Hopkins Healthcare, L.L.C.; her practice at the time focused on hospital operational matters and managed care contracting.

Ms. Schwartzman received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., cum laude, 1991) and her law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law (J.D., cum laude, 1994). Ms. Schwartzman is currently a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and Pennsylvania Bar Association. She has spoken on various health law related matters including surrogate consent issues in research, hospital/physician relationships with the pharmaceutical and device manufacturing industries, electronic medical records, telemedicine and the legal implications associated with operating an on-call center. Ms. Schwartzman is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania.
